Rose Challenge

Hello Friends,

This past week I challenged myself to learn how to draw and paint a rose in various mediums. I already showed you my first rose, done in water colour paints. Here it is again.
I did my 2nd rose in my journal, using pencil, pens and crayons.
For my next rose I attempted to use a reference photo from my online friend, Angela Hoynes at Crafting with Jack. You can find the photo, as a digi file, on her blog. I did this one in Gelatos, after drawing it with a pencil. I rubbed the Gelatos stick on my palette, added water and applied with a paint brush. These were okay, but they did not flow as nicely as my Yarka semi-moist pan water colour paints.
My 4th rose was the biggest challenge for me. I started off with a pencil drawing and Gelatos. I reached a point where I liked it, but I didn't think anyone else would appreciate the fantasy element so I kept going until I absolutely hated it. Lesson learned here - paint to please myself first.

To fix it, I tried using acrylic paints. I worked and re-worked it until it was less horrible, but still pretty awful. This morning I got out my water-mixable oil paints (Reeves) and wasted a bunch of paint, trying to fix it again instead of just throwing it out. I shouldn't say I wasted the paint because it was a learning experience. Anyway, here is what I finally came up with.
Is this the end of the rose challenge? I don't know. I might need a break for a while or maybe I will persevere until I get it right. In the meantime, I am watching lots of rose painting and drawing tutorials. I should find a style that I like and can do, eventually.

Thanks for dropping by.

I love all of your roses. They are hard to draw and paint and yours are GOOD! Have a nice day, hug, Valerie

I love them all, Teresa! They are exquisite, each in their own way -- much like actual roses where no two are exactly alike. :-D

If you are trying different ways you are bound to get different results, some you may prefer over others, but keep going you are doing fine x
